We were contacted by a young man whose sister was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at the age of 16. Her name was Kristen. Because of the location of the tumor, she chose to undergo an amputation of her right leg, and eventually, the removal of one lung. The next 8 years became a cycle of remission and relapse, interspersed with family trips, checking off the bucket list, and celebrations of life.
After each surgery, Kristen would bounce back and smile through the pain. She seemed more concerned about her family than she did about herself. Though she had the weakest body, she had the biggest heart.
Making a Difference
Her journey inspired her to make a difference and with the help of her brother, she designed a beautiful ring that wrapped around the finger in the shape of a ribbon. With the assistance of friends in the industry, Kristen had the rings made in yellow gold, white gold and rose gold. The subtle simplicity of the ribbon design caught on quickly, and Kristen and her family sold the rings to raise money that would benefit teens and young adults battling cancer.
Continuing the Legacy
Sadly, Kristen passed away in 2016 at the age of 24. Her family was determined that her legacy would continue and contacted Choose Hope to help carry on her mission. We are honored to move forward with her wishes, both by telling her story in the hopes that it will provide strength and support for those who need it most, and by offering the rings for purchase on our website.
In Kristen’s spirit of living life to the fullest and giving back, we have aptly named the ring, Giving From the Heart Ribbon Awareness Ring. Our goal is to tell her story and make a difference, just as Kristen did with the time she was given. It’s as simple as that!
