Brianna's Story

Brianna's Story

Continuing the Legacy
by Brianna McHugh

On those really tough days at work, Paula or Linda will say, “Let’s start a business!” as my mother said 13 years ago with a big smile on her face, and we all just laugh and know why we are still doing this. I am Chris’s daughter, Brianna, and I am writing on behalf of her. I am now 21 and I’m attending UW-Milwaukee while majoring in Radiologic Technology. My brother Patrick is now 23 and is living in Oshkosh being a busy guy with two jobs. We will always have this special bond that our mom left us with. This will be my working at Choose Hope although Mom had me working the glue gun and making filled gift mugs at the age of 7. It is a great honor to be able to keep my mom’s legacy going by working at Choose Hope.

It is amazing how far cancer research has come from 8 years ago. I often think if she was battling now if she might have a chance of surviving, because I know that was her whole goal. She was a huge voice in advocating for cancer research whether it was going to “March on the Hill” in Washington, D.C. twice or just working in her local community starting up our “Relay for Life”. I like to think she is still advocating and making her voice be heard, but just in a different place now. She wanted to make a difference in the cancer world, and I can see it every day. It’s amazing how my many people still bring up my Mom after 9 years and how many lives she touched in the short time she had on earth. It might be people who had known her or just people who were touched by her story after she passed. Somehow, someway, her name still gets brought up. She honestly was an amazing woman with a beautiful soul and an inspiring mind. I am very blessed that my mom left me with two wonderful ladies, Paula and Linda. Not only are they great bosses, but they are amazing mother figures to me. My Mom planned things out very well, and she knew that Paula and Linda would be there for me no matter what. I’m sure she is thanking them every day for everything they do for my brother and I. And of course, I can’t forget about the rest of the Choose Hope gang. They are all amazing people and I’m so blessed to have this second family in my life. We are all here together to make a difference in the cancer world…one day at a time.
