Why We're Here

We believe in being open and honest about our giving. Below is some more information about how Choose Hope is organized, our goals, what we do to support cancer research, and why, more than anything, we would love to go out of business.

Why would Choose Hope want to go out of business?

We started this business because Chris was waging a battle with inflammatory breast cancer, and we saw firsthand the need for new drugs that might save her life. When there's a cure for cancer, there will be no need for Choose Hope. On that day, we will have accomplished what we set out to do. It's as simple as that!

Is Choose Hope a nonprofit organization?

No. Choose Hope, Inc. is a for-profit company. Sometimes customers assume we're a nonprofit because we give so much and we offer many community resources on our website, but organizing as a business corporation allows us to better serve the cancer community.

Why did Choose Hope choose a for-profit model?

Many nonprofit organizations exist to support cancer research. Had we organized Choose Hope as a nonprofit, we'd be yet another competing for your funds, grants and volunteers. We realized that we'd be most effective if we built Choose Hope to be a strong company capable of generating its own contributions.

Whether you're a nonprofit or a for-profit like Choose Hope, the money for your cause must come from somewhere. Nonprofits raise funds through grants, contributions, special events and incidental merchandise sales. Choose Hope supports cancer research by operating as a business and following a program of corporate philanthropy. In so doing, we achieve double results: we fill the cancer community's need for high quality goods and service; and we raise our own funds for contribution without having to compete with nonprofits for scarce resources.

How does Choose Hope support cancer research?

Every month Choose Hope makes a generous donation to a variety of leading cancer institutions. We always make sure that our money goes directly to general cancer research. That way, every cancer gets a portion of our donations. Current facilities that are recipients of our donations:

Brittnee Henry, past Associate Director of Development at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston comments, "Choose Hope is a shining example of a company that realizes that business is about more than balance sheets and profit margins. It's about people. M.D. Anderson is delighted to partner with Choose Hope, and we are extremely grateful for the generous support they've contributed to further cancer research."

How does Choose Hope decide how much to give?

There isn't a formula. Like every other business, we must make sound decisions in the context of an increasingly competitive environment. Choose Hope must balance its giving objectives, and our customers' rightful demands for accountability, with the need to compete.

With that in mind, we want Choose Hope to serve as a leader and a model for other businesses in the field of corporate philanthropy. The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy's Giving in Numbers: 2011 Edition surveyed 183 corporations, including 63 of the top 100 companies in the FORTUNE 500. Among those companies, total cash giving as a percentage of pre-tax profits was 0.69%. That's right. The average corporate cash giving percentage is less than one percent. Choose Hope’s cash giving has averaged 50% of our profit over the last 5 years!

Why else can I feel good about purchasing from Choose Hope?

Corporate philanthropy isn't just about dollars. We also donate a large amount of product to fundraisers, benefits, relays, and other events that raise money for cancer research. Seldom, if ever, do we turn away a request for donated products!

  • One of our major silk-screening vendors is operated by a nonprofit organization that provides employment opportunities for disabled individuals.
  • In lieu of birthday cards, Choose Hope employees voluntarily contribute to the local food pantry in our hometown of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. We are firm believers in giving back.
  • We always do our best to purchase, use and re-use environmentally friendly packing materials. Many of your orders may come in pre-used boxes that our employees have brought in for recycling. We don’t spend money on branded packaging, tape or labels.
  • And here’s why you really want to purchase from Choose Hope - over 1/3 of our employees are cancer survivors who are passionate about their jobs and raising enough money to find a cure and put an end to cancer!
