February is Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month. This month, Choose Hope is shining a light on Gallbladder Cancer and Bile Duct Cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma). These are rare cancers, often challenging to detect early, which makes awareness and understanding incredibly important. The Facts & Statistics – Gallbladder Cancer: Each year, approximately 12,410 Americans (5,160 men and 7,250 women) are estimated to be diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. Demographics & Risk Factors: Gallbladder cancer is more common in women and older adults. Chronic inflammation of the gallbladder (often from gallstones) and obesity are key risk factors. Source: American Cancer Society (Est. projections for 2026). Bile Duct Cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma):Cholangiocarcinoma is more rare, with about 12,000 cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. It’s often categorized into intrahepatic (within the liver)and extrahepatic (outside the liver) types. Demographics & Risk Factors: While it can affect anyone, risk factors include chronic inflammation of the bile ducts (e.g., primary sclerosing cholangitis), certain liver diseases, and older age.
