Cancer of the skin is by far the most common of all cancers. Melanoma accounts for only about 1% of skin cancers.

There will be an estimated 96,500 new cases of melanoma diagnosed this year and is about 2 to 1 more common in men than women.  Melanoma is more than 20 times more common in whites than African American’s. Overall, the lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 2.6% for whites compared to 0.1% for blacks and 0.58% for Hispanics.
