Rahul, cancer survivor sharing story

Rahul’s Story

I am a resident of Dehradun in India, a Geophysicist by profession, I have worked in several Oil & Gas Exploration projects in Asia and Southern Africa. I was posted for an oil and gas exploration project in difficult terrain conditions of Assam (India) in July 2019 when I started having high fever. I was taken to various hospitals but neither any medicine worked; nor the cause was identified.

I came to my home town Dehradun for treatment where after biopsy of abdomen it was concluded in September 2019 that I’m suffering from a type of Blood Cancer, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma which is in Stage IV i.e. it has already spread in other parts of the body including neck and bone marrow.

I decided to get further treatment in Rajeev Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC), New Delhi where I was given chemotherapy for six months at interval of every 14 days. Despite several side effects of chemotherapy, I didn’t give up and completed the course of chemotherapy by going to Delhi alone for 10 times out of 12 chemo rounds. Despite my ongoing treatment and corona epidemic I joined my field duties in Tripura, a north eastern state in India.

The blessings and wishes of my family members and friends, willingness to live for the sake of better future of my kids Aryan & Amaira, proper treatment, morale enhanced by the hospital staff and nurses, and grace of God has helped me to defeat the deadliest disease like Blood Cancer even in Stage IV. I was given ABVD Chemotherapy for the treatment. Side effects of Chemotherapy are sometimes serious and long lasting. Many patients who don’t get the necessary support from the family or face other adverse situations decide to stop chemo in between when the side effects are not tolerable and they give up their willingness to live but even in these odds if someone can hold his morale high and doesn’t lose his self-confidence comes up as a winner and he becomes an example for others. I faced all the odds with courage and came out as a winner. The fight against cancer has taught me life lessons every day and have made me stronger to face any sort of challenges in life.
